Autumn Foods

Autumn is the season in which you can often feel a little depressed, lethargic, and indecisive.

The ancient Chinese discovered that autumn relates to the lungs and large intestine. You can regulate the intestines, tone the lungs, cleanse the blood, and increase stamina by emphasising the following foods in your diet during the season:

Brown rice, miso, lentils, tofu, tempeh, sturdy greens & root vegetables, varied seaweed vegetables, cooked seasonal fruits, ginger, onions, and garlic.

As the lungs and large intestine are nourished, you’ll notice that your thinking becomes clearer, you have more energy, and feel more optimistic.

Autumn cooking style

With the seasonal change from late summer to autumn, we tend towards heartier and richer dishes. A little more sea salt and oil, which warms the body, is used, along with fewer raw foods. Salads are lightly boiled, and vegetables are cut into larger chunks for longer cooking.

Rice, which is harvested around this time, is the most suitable grain. Stews, deep-fried vegetables, soups, and longer sauteeing dishes are all ideal ways to get in tune with the season.

Millet Burgers

  • 3 cups cooked millet
  • 1 grated carrot
  • 1 onion, minced or cut small
  • 1 garlic clove, cut finely
  • 1 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1/4 cup wholemeal bread crumbs, or a slice of bread shredded into pieces
  • 3 tablespoons roasted sesame seeds
  • 1/4 teaspoon thyme or marjoram
  • 1/2 teaspoon sage
  • 1/4 cup fresh minced parsley

Use 1 cup of millet for 3 cups of water, add a pinch of salt and cook for about 25-30 minutes. The millet can be roasted before cooking to add a nutty taste to the grain.

Saute the onion and garlic first, then add the carrot. Simmer for about 5 minutes then mix in a large bowl along with the other ingredients.

The mixture can be made into patties and fried until golden or they can be baked at 375 F (200 C) for 40 minutes.

Alternatively: the mixture can become a Millet loaf by putting the mixture in a baking dish in the oven.

Serve with Tofu mayonnaise.

    Bach Flowers - Gorse

Gorse can be taken when we've given up hope or have negative expectations.

Such states are often indicated on the physical level by dark rings around the eyes, looking pale, or suffering from a long term illness.

On the spiritual level, Gorse can help when we we have lost faith in our higher purpose and have fallen into despair.

Gorse can assist in reviving our sense of hope and belief in the capacity of the human spirit to rise above adversity.

General dosage is 4 - 5 drops under the tongue at least 3 times a day, or whenever feeling sense of hopelessness or despair

Lung Meridian Meditation

Imagine yourself standing on a beach, just before dawn. You can feel the coolness of the sea and almost touch the silence. It is still dark and there is a tingling in your body, and an expectation in the air around you. It is as if everything in the world is standing still - waiting and holding its breath. Your eyes are closed and darkness is all around you.

As you breathe in deeply, feel yourself waiting as you would wait for your beloved with a sense of excitement, expectation, and hope. Let this feeling grow stronger as you imagine everything starting to grow lighter, so that you sense the energy of the sea, air, sand, and rocks around you.

As you exhale, feel the darkness beginning to change as it retreats from the light.

Continue breathing in the light and breathing out whatever remains of the dark. Feel your feet becoming warmer, and let that warmth penetrate into your legs, moving upward to your hips and abdomen. Feel the energy rising as you continue to breathe in the light and breathe out the dark. Let it move into your solar plexus and then your heart. Finally let it fill your lungs neck and face turning into a bright white light.

You are glowing all over, and with that glow comes an understanding, that all things are part of creation, and share equally in that creation. There can never be any loss or grieving, only the ever changing cycle of life. Feel yourself totally trusting and believing in this cycle, for this is what makes the world go round, and the sun rise within all of us everyday.

Remember this feeling of balance and harmony. Then allow yourself in your own time to slowly come back into your body.

Shiatsu point therapy
for asthma, coughing & throat soreness

The Lung meridian is related to Autumn. Like the tree that sheds its leaves, the Lung meridian can help us to take leave of old sorrows, relationships that we've been hanging onto as well as negative beliefs.
When the Lung Meridian is functioning well, we feel more optimistic, joyful and trusting in ourselves and others.

LU 6 is located 7 finger-widths down from the elbow crease on the thumb side of the tendon

It is a good point for symptomatic relief of asthma, coughing, throat soreness as well as loss of voice.

Treatment

Using the thumb apply pressure until you feel the soreness in the point.

Taking deep breaths and maintaining the pressure breathe slowly in and out of the point until you feel the tension and pain disappear.

    Modalities and You
    Lomi Lomi

    What is Lomi Lomi?

The Temple Style Lomi Lomi massage has been handed down though the generations of Hawaiian families. Each family having its own variation of massage. The Hawaiian people believe that the body, mind and spirit are all part of the whole self.

Temple Style Lomi Lomi is based in Huna Philosophy, which has 7 principles:

Ike - The world is what you think it is
Kala - There are no limits
Makia - Energy flows where attention goes
Manawa - Now is the moment of power
Aloha - To love is to be happy
Mana - All power comes from within
Pono - Effectiveness is the measure of truth

When Huna Philosophy is applied to the massage it emphasises the importance of intent, focus, movement and the practitioner care whilst performing the massage.

What is a Lomi Lomi treatment like?

The massage itself is performed in ‘dance like’ movements, using both the forearms and hands in long flowing, yet focused strokes along the body in a continual rhythm.

The flow and pressure of the massage, both soft and deep, used in combination with the breathing, encourages the body, mind and spirit to heal.

What are the benefits of Lomi Lomi?

Lomi Lomi is suitable for anyone and can assist with:

    • Lymphatic Drainage
    • Improving circulation
    • Stimulating the immune, respiratory and digestive systems
    • Relaxing the mind
    • Recharging the body
