Counselling

Introduction

Why consider Counselling?

There are many times in our lives when we feel like things are getting on top of us. At such times we often need someone caring who will listen to us in a way that gives us an insight to ourselves and can assist us to feel better about ourselves and our situation.

Sometimes we need a friend, sometimes we need a counsellor.

How can a counsellor help?

There are many things that a counsellor or therapist can assist us with:
depression, anxiety, trauma, grief and loss, sexuality issues, abusive relationships, relationship breakdown, addiction, stress, loneliness, and improving communication, assertiveness, and self-awareness.

Making the decision to seek a counsellor.

For most people the decision to see a counsellor is not an easy one. It can seem scary or we may feel that our friends or family will judge us or see us as weak or unable to cope. However, the opposite is often true. Counselling has become well accepted in our community where everyday stresses can exhaust our physical, mental and emotional resources.

What to expect when you get to see a counsellor.

When you first make the phone call you will most likely be given an appointment. During this initial consultation, the counsellor will want to know about the various issues and problems you may be experiencing, and how you normally cope.

So if possible it's helpful if you to go the first meeting with some idea of what you would like to get from counselling. If you don't know this beforehand, don't worry, part of counselling is to help you work out your own goals.

How long will counselling take?

This is the million dollar question. It really does depend on the individual person, as well as the presenting problems and how much the person wants to work on their issues.

Somethings can be done in one session, however the average counselling takes around 5-10 sessions.

Long-term therapy where you and your therapist do more intensive work with much deeper issues, often from the past, can bring about long lasting healing. This work can often go on for longer periods.
