Introduction

Elements

Astrology uses two general classifications to describe the signs of the zodiac.

The first classification, known as Elements, divides the twelve signs into four groups: Fire signs, Earth signs, Air signs and Water signs.

The other classification, known as Qualities, divides the twelve signs into three groups: Cardinal signs, Fixed signs, and Mutable signs.

Elements:

Defining characteristics in terms of Elements is based on whether your initial reaction to everything in life is physical, pragmatic, intellectual, or emotional.

The first element is
Fire, represented by the signs Aries, Leo, and Sagittarius. Fire personalities' first reaction to everything is a physical one. They are the ones most likely to "shoot first and ask questions later." Their interest is easily aroused and they can become quite inspired and inspirational.

Because they often possess great courage, fire people are often willing to take chances and do things others would not attempt. They are also the most physically active of all the signs.

Aries needs to be active and competitive to release energy.
Leo keeps on the go by leading the way and enjoying the attention of others.
Sagittarius loves the freedom that comes from being physically independent.

The second element is
Earth, represented by the signs Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn. These individuals invariably have a down-to-earth practical nature and enjoy the material comforts of life. Earth personalities are extremely patient in comparison to Fire people, and are able to continue and consolidate whatever they have begun.

Taurus will doggedly pursue anything that fills a basic need or desire.
Virgo patiently tries to secure their own needs through service and responsibility to others.
Capricorn can forego temporary needs and desires in order to attain their goals.

The third element is
Air, represented by the signs Gemini, Libra, and Aquarius. These individuals have an intellectual orientation to everything. This approach makes them fine communicators and thinkers, however they tend to be less grounded than earth or fire signs. Relationships are of great importance to Air people.

Gemini wants be involved with everything possible.
Libra does not like to be alone and needs interaction with others.
Aquarius requires independence and freedom to fully express its originality.

The fourth element is
Water, represented by the signs Cancer, Scorpio, and Pisces. Those born in a Water sign usually lead with their hearts reacting to everything on an emotional level. Because they are the most sensitive of all the signs, feelings and emotions dominate their lives.

Cancer seeks emotional security through nurturing others.
Scorpio seeks emotional security through control.
Pisces seeks emotional security through expressing their spiritual or creative nature.
