What is Hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy is very similar to a guided meditation, in which you allow yourself to be guided into a state of deep relaxation, while remaining awake, aware and in control.
Once you're in a deeply relaxed state, you’re then able to tap into and communicate with your unconscious mind through suggestions given by the hypnotherapist.
These suggestions are designed to help attain specific goals that you determine prior to the session.
This is how Melinda summed up her experience of hypnotherapy:
“My experience of hypnotherapy was extremely positive.
Whilst I initially had apprehensions about what the process might involve: being unconscious and losing sense of a period of time was completely inaccurate.
Issi talked me through my issue raised in the questionnaire and then, using the soothing tone of his voice he simply guided me, step by step, into a full body relaxation, much the way one does when getting oneself into a meditative state.
Then he raised some of the things that were discussed around my issue and repeated some of the language that I used when explaining to him what life might look like without this issue; a sort of positive reinforcement.
I left the session feeling so revitalised and that a personal renewal had occurred.”
Will I be under the hypnotherapist’s "power"?
No. You cannot be made to do anything against your will or values.
The hypnotherapist is simply there to enable you to relax deeply and focus on what you want to achieve.
What about shows where people quack like ducks?
A stage hypnotist knows how to screen volunteers and only selects people who are willing to do almost anything to have a dramatic and exciting experience.
And that includes quacking like a duck or dancing like a bear.
What if I can't go into hypnosis?
Hypnosis is a natural state that we all go into everyday without thinking about it. Driving a car on “automatic pilot”, reading a book, listening to music, watching tv or absorbed in your favourite hobby are all examples of being in a trance state.
So, everyone can go into hypnosis although the depth will naturally vary from person to person.
Will I be asleep during hypnotherapy?
No. Although you feel deeply relaxed, you remain conscious, alert, and aware of everything that is happening throughout the session.
You might like to think of hypnosis as the self-talk or visualisation that an athlete or an actor goes through before a performance in order to reduce stress and remain calm and focussed.
